Fernando Torres was born on June 22, 1961, in the city of Tarma, department of Junin, Peru. He obtained the undergraduate degree (1985) and the master's degree (1988) in mathematics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He moved Moving to Brazil, he completed his doctorate (1993) at the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), under the guidance of Professor Arnaldo Garcia. He joined (1998) the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing at the State University of Campinas (IMECC/UNICAMP) as a full professor, becoming Titular Professor at that institution in September 2015. He devoted his life to research in the area of Algebraic Geometry, mainly on themes related to Algebraic Curves over Finite Fields, leaving the scientific community with a huge legacy.
